Session 8 Webinar: EMDR Therapy

Friday May 08, 2026 | Noon-1:30PM Eastern US time

Speaker: Noora Niskanen LCSW, MFA

This 90-minute continuing education course will be a deep dive into EMDR and the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model it’s based on.  Beyond activating and processing traumatic memories using bilateral stimulation, and maintaining dual attention between past memories and present awareness via the eight-phase EMDR treatment protocol, we will explore how to identify target memories and the 3-pronged treatment approach which addresses past experiences that contribute to current symptoms, present triggers that activate distress, and the development of adaptive responses for future situations.

Through didactic presentation and clinical illustration, this session will provide an overview of EMDR’s theoretical foundations, treatment process, and clinical applications in trauma therapy.

Brief Introduction:

The following brief description of EMDR is a synthesis of quotes from the homepage of the EMDR Institute

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories.

EMDR therapy facilitates the accessing and processing of traumatic memories and other adverse life experience to bring these to an adaptive resolution. After successful treatment with EMDR therapy, affective distress is relieved, negative beliefs are reformulated, and physiological arousal is reduced.

During EMDR therapy the client attends to emotionally disturbing material in brief sequential doses while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus. Therapist directed lateral eye movements are the most commonly used external stimulus but a variety of other stimuli including hand-tapping and audio stimulation are often used.
